Friday's rain was welcome news for the firefighters battling northern forest fires.
Manitoba Conservation says the rain will be especially good news for crews battling the largest fire which is burning near Norris Lake north of Grand Rapids near Highway 6.
The fire is estimated to have already burned more than 62,000 hectares.
The fire is one of four main fires burning in northern Manitoba right now. Fires are burning near Sherridon, St. Theresa Point, Wasagamack, Norris Lake, and lightning has started a fire in the area near Brochet. (see map)
The fire near Norris Lake has caused problems for motorists travelling on Highway 6. Manitoba Highways has temporarily closed the highway numerous times because of poor visibility caused by smoke.
Hundreds of people have been evacuated since last Wednesday because of the threat of forest fires and then the health risk from blowing smoke. Property damage to this point has been minimal.
Residents of St. Theresa Point have been told they can return to their homes this weekend.
