People living along Pioneer Beach in the RM of St. Laurent said strong westerly winds caused ice from Lake Manitoba to pile up along the shore near their homes.
Fred Hartman was working in his yard and said the ice went from lake level to several metres high in about 10 minutes on Sunday afternoon.
Further down the beach, it was up to 10 metres high in some places.
The wind was blowing from the northwest Monday and the ice, which now borders the very edge of Hartman's property, had not moved any closer.
He said he is concerned if the wind starts coming out of the west again more ice from the lake could push the piles farther onto the shore and potentially damage his or his neighbours' homes.
According to Hartman, ice piles do blow in off the lake every spring but usually in April and he has never seen them this high or this close to homes.
Resident Bob Hayden echoed that.
"It (has) come up before but normally it doesn't come up on shore. We've had enough of Mother Nature's disasters. We could live without this stuff," said Hayden.
