Salvation Army needs 2,000 more toys this year in order to make sure kids have a present to unwrap on Christmas Day.

The Toy Mountain campaign announced it is raising its goal from 15,000 toys to 17,000.

Maj. Rob Kerr, prairie director for the Salvation Army, said they already have 1,500 more children registered this year than they had in total last year.

“So we’ve had to up our goal, because we realized we’ve got an increased demand, and we just want to make sure that every kid gets a toy.”

Part of that increase comes from 1,100 newcomer children who have registered with Salvation Army, many of whom are Syrian refugees.

On Friday and Saturday, Salvation Army will have a collection centre set up in the center court at CF Polo Park.

People looking to donate can also drop off new, unwrapped toys at fire and police stations and at any Scotiabank locations.
