City crews have opened the second leg of a popular river ice-skating trail in Winnipeg. The River Trail on the Assiniboine River opened earlier than ever this year.

Crews have been working round the clock to groom the trail to prepare it for skaters.

The trail is now ready for people to hit the ice anywhere between The Forks and Osborne Street.

The trail runs along Assiniboine Avenue and has additional access points at both Osborne Street and the Legislative Building.

The Forks also opened two hockey rinks within the past week. On Dec. 24, two rinks were opened in the Historic Port.

Within weeks warming huts will begin to appear on the trail as part of the Architecture Competition on Ice, which will be held in the third week of January.
