It may feel like summer, but winter still has an icy grip on Winnipeg's water pipes. Today marks 79 days of frozen pipes for Chocolatier Constance Popp.
Owner Constance Menzies discovered the problem back in March. "I thought, ‘This will be okay for the next couple of days, but this is not sustainable,’" she said.
Menzies says keeping her business running has had its challenges, but has no other choice than to make it work and stay open.
Because of where the building is located, a ground hose to bring water inside got ruled out. She looked for a creative solution.
"The only option was to run a hose through our building,” she said. “We had to hire a plumber and spent some money to our buildings, to our ceilings."
The hose then has to get insulated to keep the water warm at night so it wouldn't freeze. She says she worries about the state of the pipes and the problem coming back this winter.
The City of Winnipeg has advised all along that it could take until June for the ground to thaw.
