A standing hearing will take place later this month to determine who can participate in the inquest into the case of a woman who died after being discharged and sent home in a cab from a Winnipeg hospital two years ago.

A friend brought Heather Brenan, 68, to Seven Oaks Hospital’s emergency department on Jan. 24, 2012.

Brenan, who had a number of medical issues and lived alone, underwent tests and assessments before being discharged three days later and sent home late at night in a cab while a friend was expected to meet her at home, said the province.

Brenan collapsed upon arrival and an ambulance called.

The province said Brenan’s condition deteriorated once back in hospital and she died on Jan. 28, 2012.

In February 2013, Manitoba's chief medical examiner called an inquest into the circumstances surrounding her death and the hospital's discharge policy.

A judge will determine who can participate in the inquest into her death.

“Those interested in applying for standing should contact Melissa Carlson, inquest counsel, at 204 945-4248 or melissa.carlson@gov.mb.ca by Jan. 23. The standing hearing will be held on Monday, Jan. 27 at 1 p.m. in Courtroom 405 at the Manitoba Law Courts Complex, 408 York Ave., Winnipeg,” said the province in a release.
