A 48-year-old man from Kemnay has been charged after an RCMP officer was shot in the line of duty.

RCMP said Clayton Ewert has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of uttering threats to kill and two counts of assault, among other charges.

The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 15, in the town Kemnay, about 15 kilometres west of Brandon.

"We did see the shots. We saw the smoke coming from the shots by the tree," said Stephen Stadnyk, a witness.

Two shots rang out in the community of Kemnay Friday night, sending three RCMP officers scrambling for cover. One of them was wounded in the gunfire.

"He was running, regardless of if he was shot or not. I didn't even really notice he was shot until later," said Stadnyk.

According to the RCMP, officers were responding to a call for assistance at the time of the shooting.

The officer's injuries are not considered life-threatening.

An hour-long standoff followed the shooting before witnesses say a man came out with his hands up and police took him into custody.

Police had locked-down the neighbourhood, preventing Sandra Stadnyk from getting to her two children in a house just down the street from the shooting.

"It was scary, stressful, I was on the other side of the bridge waiting to come through because I was worried about them. And they were in an emotional state," said Sandra Stadnyk.

The shooting came just one day after the RCMP announced it faces four charges under the Canada Labour Code stemming from the fatal shooting of three officers in Moncton by Justin Bourque.

A review of that incident said responding officers faced problems relating to communication, and access to high-powered weaponry and protective equipment.

Stephen Stadnyk witnessed the shooting.

"They jumped in the car and they backed up towards the road and that's when the other officers pulled up and they started getting their vests and rifles out," he said.

Neighbours have identified the man who surrendered to police after the standoff as Clayton Ewert.

Ewert has been held in custody and is scheduled to appear in Brandon Provincial Court on May 19, 2015.

The investigation, led by RCMP Major Crime Services, is continuing.
