Manitoba RCMP said a search warrant they executed in Swan River on Monday came after two men were assaulted.
The incident occurred in the RM of Swan Valley West on Sunday, police said.
The two victims, aged 19 and 20, were assaulted and taken to hospital with serious injuries.
On Monday, police charged a 51-year-old man after seizing a firearm, ammunition and knives from a Swan River residence.
Around 9:00 a.m. the Emergency Response Team, Major Crime Unit and local police executed a search warrant at a residence in Swan River.
Marvin David Flett is charged with possession of a firearm contrary to prohibition order, possession of ammunition contrary to prohibition order, unauthorized possession of a firearm, knowledge of unauthorized possession of a firearm and failure to comply with a probation order.
He is remains in police custody.
An 18-year-old man was also arrested along with Flett, but he has since been released without charge.
When police arrived to execute the search warrant on Monday, nearby Heyes School was locked down for approximately 45 minutes. Police said this was only a precautionary measure – the school was not in danger.
Tim Mendel, superintendent of the Swan Valley School Division, said the principal at Heyes School got a call from RCMP in the morning about a police presence in the town.
The school has between 150 and 160 students and goes from Kindergarten to Grade 6.
“We went into a hold-and-secure, which essentially means students were asked to come inside. Doors were locked and normal classes,” Mendel said.
He said the extra security measure remained in place from 8:45 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.
“They asked to keep kids inside. You’re always concerned, but they didn’t indicate to us it was something we should worry about at the school,” Mendel added.
Jocelyn Beehler, principal at Community Bible Fellowship Christian School, said she was driving past on the highway and could see there were numerous police vehicles at a home off Highway 83.
“I just quietly let teachers know that things are going on and we took some precautionary measures,” Beehler said. “Our school policy is that our school doors are locked anyway. The RCMP never did contact us.”
The school has 48 students and goes from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 8.
RCMP said this is an ongoing investigation. They explained that they are not concerned for the public’s safety.
