A summer storm that brought a funnel cloud and baseball-sized hail developed across the prairies Wednesday night, after a series of severe thunderstorms developed over southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has confirmed a tornado touched down near Alida, Sask., about 40 kilometres from the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border.

The storm developed just east of Carlyle, Sask. and passed over the town of Alida where witnesses observed a tornado and hail.

Meteorologist Bryan Van Wilgenburg said video from the scene shows debris being flung from the base of the swirling cloud, enough to indicate a funnel cloud touched down.

The thunderstorm moved across southwestern Manitoba and then eventually made its way across the international border into North Dakota near midnight.

As for damage, CTV Regina reported the tornado may have caused some structural damage to a house in the area.

ECCC also reported golf ball sized hail in Solsgirth, Man, loonie sized hail near Birtle, Man, ping-pong ball sized hail southwest of Birtle and toonie sized hail west of Rivers, Man. during Wednesday’s thunderstorm.
