The University of Winnipeg says it is looking into opening a new indoor athletic centre at its downtown campus.

The building would go up just south of the Duckworth Centre where other campus buildings are ready for the wrecking ball.

University President Lloyd Axworthy says the centre is still in the planning stages, and would be as much for inner city kids and community groups as it would be for university students

"We think it would also be a great destination point for downtown Winnipeg where a lot of other amateur sports groups and others want to hold tournaments or special athletic events or pow-wows they can be held right here in the downtown and that's what we're all about we're here to help this downtown revitalize," said Axworthy.

University officials are still working with community groups to determine exactly what's needed.

Axworthy says he expects a report in the coming months.
