History

  • Liberal James Richardson won the seat from 1968-1978. Richardson was in Pierre Trudeau's cabinet, but quit over language policy and was an Independent when he retired.
  • Most of the riding went into WinnipegFort Garry, won in 1979 by Liberal Lloyd Axworthy and held until 1988.
  • In 1984 there was a new South Centre and Fort Garry became much of a new South riding.
  • It was won in 1988 by Tory Dorothy Dobbie. She ran third in 1993 to Liberal Reg Alcock.
  • Alcock won again in 1997 and was appointed president of the treasury board for the Canadian Wheat Board in 2003.
  • He had an easy win in 2004 over Conservative Rod Bruinooge, but lost the rematch in 2006 when Bruinooge won by 111 votes.
  • The Tory won easily in 2008 and 2011, but is not seeking re-election.
