Last Election

In the 2011 election, Conservative Joyce Bateman won over Liberal incumbent Anita Neville by about 700 votes.

Neville held the seat since 2000.

History

  • South Centre existed 1924-1974, then returned in 1988 and was won by Lloyd Axworthy. He won again in 1993 and 1997.
  • Over the years, Axworthy was minister of employment and immigration, transport, labour, western economic diversification and foreign affairs.
  • He quit to teach in British Columbia and was replaced by Anita Neville, who won handily for the Liberals in 2000, but by much less in 2004, 2006 and 2008.
  • Neville lost in 2011 to Conservative Joyce Bateman.

Boundaries

  • Includes Old Tuxedo and south of it, Canadian Mennonite University and Kapyong Barracks.
  • East along the river is Edgeland, Sir John Franklin and the rest of River Heights with tree-lined boulevards.
  • In the east around Armstrong Point and River Osborne, there are condos and high-rises.
  • The east border is the Red River, with some expensive housing in the north. The south of this area is middle income.
  • Around Pembina Highway is the Fort Rouge area, Crescentwood, Rockwood and Grant Park.
  • The Assiniboine River is the north border and the west borders Assiniboine Park.
  • Along the Red River are the areas of Riverview, Lord Roberts, Point Road, Wildwood and Crescent Park.
  • To the south, northern Fort Garry has Parker, Beaumont, Maybank, and Chevrier.

Industries

  • Has the top income in the province.
  • To the south is an industrial area with Monsanto (of Roundup herbicide) and Cargill, one of the biggest in the grain trade.
  • There is also Buhler Industries farm machinery, Man Telecom and North West Company Fund.
