Winnipeg police say a 16-year-old has been charged after someone pointed a laser at the Air1 police helicopter Wednesday night.

Members of the flight operations unit were on patrol at around 10 p.m. near Salter Street and Selkirk Avenue when it happened.

Air1 was struck with the laser about five times.

Police said the laser filled the cockpit with refracted green light. It caused the flight crew and pilot to become temporarily disoriented, and caused the pilot to make abrupt maneuvers.

Police found the light was coming from a home in the 300 block of Selkirk Avenue.

Ground patrol officers found a 16-year-old with a laser, police said.

He was taken into custody, and faces charges of mischief endangering life, and projecting a light source into a navigable airspace.

The teen was released on a promise to appear.
