A young football fan's first Winnipeg Blue Bombers game, is an experience he'd like to forget.

The Bombers beat the Saskatchewan Roughriders 17-10 in Saturday’s Banjo Bowl, the same game where a nine-year-old boy left in tears after being mistreated by other fans, all because he was wearing green.

"One girl points at my son saying he's wearing green, he needs to go back where he came from,” said Janell-Marie Emond.

“Fans were saying ‘you're a rider fan, you stink’.”

Emond even said a fan poured a beer on her son’s head.

Emond and her son, Taylor, were gifted tickets to the Banjo Bowl, for both of them and this was their first game-day experience .

"The beginning was fun but then it wasn't that fun at the end," said Taylor, who left the game in tears.

"It wasn't okay they were just being really mean."

The comments continued even as they were outside the stadium, and with Taylor in tears it was Saskatchewan Roughriders fans who tried to comfort the boy.

"Two Rider fans saw what was happening, a woman comes up to me and she grabs my son and gives him a hug," said Emond.

The family is in contact with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers organization.

On Monday the team dropped off a gift basket for Taylor and is inviting the family to another game.

"We consistently strive to provide all of our great fans the best game day experience possible, and incidents like these are extremely disappointing, and do not represent the majority of our fan base," the team said in a statement to CTV.

Still, Janelle-Marie Emond said she'd deeply disappointed that fans chose target her son.

"You want to make fun of adults, you want to poke fun because of a rivalry, that’s fine, but when you're bugging kids, I have a huge issue," she said.
