Millions of Americans tuned into tonight's U.S. presidential debate, including hundreds here in Winnipeg. Many of whom gathered at Confusion Corner Bar & Grill.

"It’s two people who are causing a lot of controversy, so it makes it exciting to see," said Alex Portillo, who moved to Winnipeg from Washington DC.

Even though Portillo has been living in Canada for 6 years, he explained the importance of this fall’s presidential election.

"Everyone I love, my community, my friends are all still there,” said Portillo. “I plan on going back one day and I don't want to go back to my country in shambles."

The event hosted by Democrats Abroad also gave Americans living in Winnipeg the chance to sign up and vote.

Jennifer Carpenter who represents the group said there are more than 1,000 U.S. citizens living in Manitoba, and hundreds here in Winnipeg.

"There seems to be a lot of interest in the city, so I’m really excited about that but I’m more excited about how many voters we sign up tonight," she said.

Carpenter counted 15 Americans who used the viewing party to register for an ‘absentee ballot’, which they can use to cast their vote before the November 8th election night.

She said those who did not attend Monday night’s viewing party can register online.
