Officials with the Canadian Museum for Human Rights announced the facility will open in Winnipeg on Sept. 20, 2014.
Officials said an estimated 250,000 people are expected to visit the museum each year and predict about $160 million in economic spinoffs.
"When the doors of this building open next September, it will be a historic moment for Canada and a proud day for Manitoba, as we welcome visitors from across the country and around the world,” said CEO Stuart Murray in a statement.
“The CMHR is the first museum in the world solely dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights,” said CMHR officials. “The Museum will use immersive multi-media technology and other innovative approaches to create an inspiring encounter with human rights unlike anything visitors have experienced before.”
Annabelle Mays from the Manitoba Historical Society worries, however, that the CMHR will hurt other Winnipeg museums, drawing visitors from them.
Philippe Mailhot at the St. Boniface Museum hopes that people visiting the CMHR will also cross the river, helping increase attendance.
Museum fees and membership details will be set early in 2014.
