The final 4 became the final 3 Saturday night at the Safeway Championship in Brandon.
West St. Paul’s Reid Carruthers handed Fort Rouge’s Mike McEwen his first loss of the week.
Carruthers defeated McEwen 6-5 in an extra end in the 1 vs 2 game to secure a berth in Sunday afternoon’s men’s provincial curling final.
The turning point came in the 8th end when McEwen gave up a steal of 2 and allowed Carruthers to take a 5-4 lead.
In the 3 vs 4 game, despite youngster Braden Calvert’s best efforts, the 19-year-old could not upset defending provincial champion Jeff Stoughton of Charleswood.
Stoughton scored 3 in the 8th end on his way to a 6-4 win over Calvert.
Calvert, the Carberry product and crowd favourite in Brandon, curls out of Winnipeg’s Deer Lodge Curling Club.
The loss eliminates Calvert from the competition.
McEwen meantime will take on his longtime rival, Stoughton, in Sunday’s semifinal which begins at 9 a.m. Manitoba time.
The winner will play Carruthers in the provincial final which starts at 2:30 p.m.
