Winnipeg police said a driver is now facing a charge of failing to remain at the scene of an accident causing death after a pedestrian hit in September died from injuries.

Just before 4 a.m. on Sept. 30, emergency crews responded to Lagimodiere Boulevard at the south Perimeter Highway and found a man who had been hit by a car.

Police said the vehicle that hit him fled from the scene before officers arrived.

The 18-year-old pedestrian was rushed to hospital in critical condition, but later died, said police on Friday morning.

The driver had turned himself in on Oct. 1 and was originally charged with driving without a licence and failing to remain at the scene of an accident causing bodily harm.

Police said the charge against the 27-year-old driver was upgraded on Oct. 11.

Officers continue to investigate.
