Winnipeg homeowners will no longer have to pay for garbage or recycling carts damaged by vandals or vehicles.

City council has green-lit a plan that would see bins not broken by the homeowner replaced, free of charge.

Currently, only carts damaged by Emterra are covered by the city.

The city anticipates 1,500 claims per year at a cost of $127,000.

People will still be on the hook if their bins are stolen or go missing.
