Problems continue with snow clearing in Winnipeg.
The majority of a snow zone was missed overnight Monday.
The contractor responsible for snow zone J in St. Vital did not clear the full area during the scheduled time.
Early reports suggested the whole zone was missed, but the city said Tuesday afternoon about 30 per cent of the zone had been completed.
St. Vital Coun. Brian Mayes wants to fire the snow contractor in snow zone J, saying this is the second time this winter the contractor skipped the area.
"You got to put up and do the job," he said.
But, Public Works Chair Coun. Justin Swandel said that would take much-needed equipment off the streets.
"We can't be making...major shifts in the middle of trying to deal with this. We don't have access to anything else," he said.
The city said it won't fire the contractor in snow zone J because that would remove 60 plows and other equipment from the streets.
Kara Mitchler lives in the area falling under snow zone J.
"Well, they can't get the job done - then what is the sense in paying them?” asked Mitchler.
St. Vital homeowner Lori Fleetwood doesn't blame the contractor . She blames the people who hired them at city hall.
"The amount that we spend on property taxes - and considering they are going up - that sure doesn't reflect the service that we're getting,” said Fleetwood.
Many Winnipeggers are frustrated with snow clearing efforts where ruts and ice are left behind even after plows roll through. The city said in some cases, contractors are dealing with equipment issues due to the cold.
On Monday, the mayor blamed problems with snow removal on some contractors, describing their performance as poor.
Mayor Sam Katz said if they miss an area or don't clear it properly, then they must go back and redo those streets.
