A new study by Workopolis.com found Winnipeg to be one of the cheapest housing markets in Canada.

According to the study, the average cost of buying a house in Winnipeg is $270,605. The only city cheaper is Halifax ($264,447), while Vancouver is the most expensive at $819,336.

The study also found the salary needed to afford an average house in Winnipeg is $58,235. Experts say that isn’t reasonable, though, because while houses may be cheaper, wages are also less which makes a lot of properties unaffordable for the average person.

"We have a good standard of living here, but we still have a large proportion of our population that isn't making enough money,” said Karen Keppler, an economics professor at the University of Winnipeg.

Other figures from the study show the average monthly mortgage rate in Winnipeg is $1,179 and the property tax is $274.
