Tina Fontaine, 15, wanted to deliver a victim impact statement at the hearing for her father's killers, but never had the chance as her own life was cut short.

She was reported missing and her body was later pulled from the Red River in Winnipeg in August.

Tina's father Eugene was killed in 2011.

Nicholas Abraham and Jonathan Starr previously pleaded guilty to Eugene Fontaine's 2011 death.

On Oct. 15, they were led into the courtroom in Winnipeg for a sentencing hearing.

Court heard victim impact statements from the family read out by the Crown.

One from Eugene's sister Robyn stated, "You two men stole my brother from us. That's something that you can't give back."

Court heard that Abraham, Starr and Eugene Fontaine were drinking together at Starr's home when an argument about money broke out. Abraham and Starr brutally beat Fontaine and tied him to a shed overnight, leading to his death.

The Crown is asking for a sentence of 10 years for each man. Defence lawyers have asked for five years or less.

More than a dozen members of the Fontaine family attended court for the sentencing hearing.

A statement from an aunt and uncle of Tina Fontaine's also said the teen was planning to write a victim impact statement regarding her father's killing.

They said Tina wanted the judge to know how sad she was after her father's death.

“She was very hurt, very lost. That's when she drifted away. They took that from her and they took two people from our family,” said Brenda Fontaine, one of Tina’s aunts.

“I don't forgive them. They took away my brother and they can't give (him) back,” said Lana Fontaine, another of Tina’s aunts.

Tears flowed in court as Nick Abraham turned and addressed Eugene Sinclair's family. "So sorry," he sobbed. "Wish it was me instead."

Jon Starr read a statement to the family apologizing: "There isn't a day that goes by where I don't feel regret or shame.”

Court heard the men faced abuse as children and became addicted to drugs and alcohol. One of the accused said he now wants the chance to stop the cycle with his daughter.

Family of the two men embraced Fontaine's relatives outside court.

The Fontaine family said they wish they still had the chance to save Tina.

No arrests have been announced in her death.

The judge will give her written decision in December for Abraham and Starr in the killing of Eugene.
