Festival du Voyageur starts February 14, 2014, but the snow sculptors are already hard at work.

Part of annual event is the International Snow Sculptor Symposium that brings artists from around the globe to Winnipeg.

“They are from Colombia, Sweden, Spain, Italy, Germany, France, Estonia,” said symposium coordinator Gary Tessier.

He said about 40 artists submit their work, but only 10 are selected. Local carvers are welcome too, as part of a competition.

Steinbach artist Lyle Peters tries to take time every year to enter the competition. He has won in the past, but said he enters for other reasons.

“Usually I do it alone at home in Steinbach,” said Peters. “Here, I get more friends involved and get people involved, so that's a lot of fun.”

It took Peters and his partner more than 25 hours to create his latest masterpiece,

You can see it and the rest of the 60 or so snow sculptures starting Friday evening at Voyageur Park.
