A fire at a duplex in Transcona Thursday evening caused major damage and forced nearby residents to evacuate their homes.

Officials say they responded to a report of a house fire in the 700 block of McMeans Avenue around 10:45 p.m. Thursday.

Fire crews said smoke and flames could be seen coming from the basement and kitchen area.

No one was home when the fire broke out, but neighbours were forced to evacuate their homes as a precaution.

Fire officials say one cat died in the fire, another was rescued.

The blaze caused an estimated $300,000 in damages to the building.

There is no word on the cause of the fire, but police believe it started in the basement.
