Five horses were killed in a barn fire in Oakbank early Wednesday morning.

Multiple fire departments were called to the scene around 4 am.

The barn, on a hillside road property near Bird's Hill Park, is a complete loss.

Some cats may also have been killed in the fire.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined but early indications point to it being accidental.

The owner of the property, Harry Smalley, says he is devastated by the loss.

Smalley’s daughter Jennifer Smith said her dad was awoken by crackling and ran out to the barn to try and save the horses but the flames were too intense.

She says in addition to being beloved family pets, the horses were also used to teach children with disabilities how to ride.
