A fire on a freight train in the St. James industrial area may have been deliberately set.

Around 8:00 p.m. Wednesday night, emergency crews were called to tracks near Wellington Avenue and Empress Street.

A car carrying pulp for paper production was on fire.

Crews got the fire under control quickly.

“Crews were able to stretch some lines from both the east side and the west side of the tracks. They gained entry, extinguished the fire with no problems whatsoever, it was an easy fire to distinguish," said Wally Hergesheimer from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service.

The fire happened at an interchange between Canadian Pacific and Burlington Northern rails.

CP tells us the fire is believed to be an act of mischief and they'll assist the police investigation.

The incident won't disrupt their service.

The fire department said the blaze caused minimal damage and no injuries.
