More than 200 students and faculty rallied at the University of Manitoba Tuesday afternoon, protesting a proposed three to four per cent cut to the school’s operating budget.

The rally was organized by the Federation of Students in Manitoba.

“Programs are going to be cut. Students are going to have to pay more for less options so the quality of education is going to go down while the price is going to go up,” said Zach Fleischer, chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students.

U of M President David Barnard said the school has no choice but to cut the budgets of some faculties, due to higher salaries and overall operating costs.

“We will make some difficult decisions. It may be that we see class sizes that are larger. It just doesn't seem possible that we can keep doing everything we've been doing in the past with costs that exceed revenues,” he said.

The university said it expects to decide where it will make those cuts by the spring.
