Babies aren’t always born in a hospital, and sometimes they arrive on a faster timeline than parents expect.

That’s exactly what happened to one Winnipeg couple, who had a surprise delivery this past Valentine’s Day.

"I was kind of shocked,” said father Flinn Dorion. "I didn't know what to do."

His baby wasn't supposed to arrive for another month and a half.

Mom Joanne Fontaine said she thought she simply had to go to the washroom, but as she sat down – her water broke.

"I told my boyfriend to call the ambulance. I can feel the baby's head,” said Fontaine.

The ambulance didn't make it in time – five minutes after Fontaine asked for the call, her baby boy came into this world by falling into the toilet.

"I had to pick him out," said Dorion, who then cleaned off his new son.

A short time later, emergency crews arrived and took over.

Dorian and Fontaine named their baby boy Christopher.

The newborn was small in size, but healthy; he is currently being monitored inside the neonatal intensive care unit at Health Sciences Centre.

"I feel good; I'm in love with him," said Fontaine.

The couple hopes to take baby Christopher home when he gets closer to his original due date in March.

None of the emergency personnel who helped the couple were available to speak to CTV News on Wednesday; however, fire chief John Lane offered this statement:

"The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service is pleased to have played a part in this safe and happy out-of-hospital delivery. It wishes the family all the best as they welcome their newest member into the world."
