Winnipeg is spending less money on roads despite two property tax hikes, according to a city councillor.

Russ Wyatt alleges the city is only using $101 million for local and regional streets this year. That's down from last year's budgeted amount of $103 million.

Money is being used from the roads pot for bike paths and to balance the books, Wyatt said. The Transcona councillor said the six-year forecast also shows a drop in overall funding.

Infrastructure chair Janice Lukes refutes Wyatt's claims. She said the city is spending more on streets, arguing bike paths are part of some regional road projects in some cases.

The city's infrastructure committee is set to ask city administrators to clarify Wyatt's claims.

Homeowners are facing increases in property taxes and frontage levies to repair streets and bridges.
