Manitoba’s Human Rights Commission agreed that a school in Transcona discriminated against a young transgender girl.

Nine-year-old Bella Burgos transitioned from male to female last summer, and wanted to use the female bathroom at her school in the River East Transcona School Division.

Bella’s mom, Izzy Burgos, said the school forced Bella to use a gender neutral bathroom when a parent confronted Bella and told her not to use the female bathroom.

Burgos felt the move discriminated against Bella. The family filed a complaint with the Manitoba Human Rights Commission.

Burgos said the commission’s board sided with an investigation that found the school division discriminated against Bella.

Burgos said the commission recommended one last round of mediation. She said if that fails, the case will go to a public hearing.
