A Manitoba senior has died after testing positive for West Nile Virus, the province confirmed Thursday.

Manitoba Health said the woman, who had pre-existing health conditions, was in her 70s and lived in Southern Health–Santé-Sud region. She’s believed to have been exposed to the virus in that region in mid-August.

This is the first death as a result of WNV in Manitoba since September 2013, and the ninth death since the province started collecting the information.

The province said shorter days and cooler temperatures mean mosquitoes will most likely bite late in the afternoon and early in the evening.

Manitobans are encouraged to take preventative measures, like reducing their time outside, use appropriate mosquito repellent and wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothes.
