Friends and family of Sgt. Mark Salesse were in Banff, Alberta to mark a difficult anniversary.

One year ago, the experienced search and rescue technician was swept away in an avalanche during a routine training exercise. It took nearly a week to recover his body.

The 44-year-old was originally from New Brunswick, but worked as search and rescue technician based at 17 Wing in Winnipeg

On Friday, Salesse's mother visited the place where her son spent his final hours, a visit now providing closure.

"It’s important for me to be here today to recognize that he accomplished everything that he set out. I could not, not be here," said Liz Quinn.

The experienced climber spent much of his life rescuing others. Family and friends say they're remembering him for always putting others first.
