New numbers released by Peg reveal the extent of alcohol and drug abuse in Winnipeg neigbourhoods.

Peg’s substance abuse indicator measured the number of people aged 10 or older who have been diagnosed as abusing drugs or alcohol.

Peg found rates of substance abuse vary across the city, with an average rate of 4.9 per cent. The lowest rate was in Fort Garry at 2.6 per cent. The highest was in Point Douglas at 9.8 per cent.

The numbers were gathered over two five-year periods from 2002 -2006 and 2007-2011.

The report said there is a strong connection between income and social well-being. Low income communities experience higher rates of social issues related to health, education, and housing, among others.

Peg is a community indicator system, which tracks and measures Winnipeg’s well-being. It aims to inform Winnipeggers about how the city is changing, for the good and the bad.

Funding comes from the City of Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority and The Province of Manitoba, and a variety of corporate and non-profit groups.
