Mayoral candidate Gord Steeves promised to never reopen Portage and Main to pedestrian traffic.

“We’ve gone through this debate probably five times over the course of the last 30 years,” said Steeves. “Every politician has come to the conclusion that it can’t be opened.

Steeves said the debate is having a “destabilizing” effect on the intersection. “It’s causing people that are operating businesses in Winnipeg Square to lose confidence in their future and it’s causing investors to lose confidence in the future of Portage and Main.”

Steeves said opening the intersection will not only slow down traffic, but cause massive delays as for those walking, he says it would be dangerous if suddenly it was opened.
