Prairie dwellers -- even those living in southern Manitoba -- were treated to a bright display of northern lights Saturday.

Vibrant aurora borealis could be seen clearly across the province, including Winnipeg, with many sharing photos on Twitter.

Scott Young, an astronomer at the Manitoba Museum planetarium, says the chances are good to see a return show.

“There were some great views last night and it looks like that activity is going to continue,” said Young, adding Sunday’s clear skies will enhance the view.

The astronomer explained that solar activity along with energy from the sun travels through space and gets funneled around the north and south poles.

“What we’re seeing is that solar energy glow in the dark,” said Young.

Young will be out Sunday with a fisheye lens to capture the dancing lights and said others can increase their chances of getting a clear view by heading north around the Perimeter and Birds Hill Park.

Timing is more difficult, however, because the northern lights could come out just after dark or closer to midnight.
