With a mandatory bicycle helmet law for those under 18 in its final preparatory stages, the Manitoba government says first time offenders won’t have to pay the $50 fine.
The province is finalizing the details of Manitoba's new bicycle helmet law, which will take effect within a few months.
It will require anyone under 18 to wear a helmet while riding a bike or face a $50 fine.
Healthy Living Minister Jim Rondeau says the aim is to promote helmet use not collect cash, so the province will let first-time offenders take an online bike safety quiz to avoid the fine.
The law is expected to come into effect before the spring and will be accompanied by a public education campaign.
While it does not apply to adults, Rondeau said he is not ruling out an extension of the law sometime in the future.
