As Winnipeggers gear up for back to school and fall recreational programs data released Wednesday from Peg shows physical activity in Winnipeg is lower than the majority of Canada.

Data released by Statistics Canada shows that in 2014 52.4 per cent of Winnipeggers were only ‘sometimes’ or ‘often’ physically active during leisure time down from the 54.3 per cent five years earlier.

The Peg an arm of the United Way Winnipeg tracks health within the community year after year.

Peg said regular physical activity helps growth and development, prevention of chronic disease, decreases stress levels and helps people remain more independent as they age.

The Peg said for the first time in over ten years fewer Winnipeggers were physically active than the national average at 53.7 per cent.
