Polar bears at Assiniboine Park Zoo received a special treat Wednesday morning.

The bears walked in to find pumpkins placed around their enclosure and in the pool.

They didn’t wait long to tear into the fall-flavoured treat. The zoo uses pumpkins as part of its enrichment program for the animals.

"We know that this is something they truly enjoy,” said Janice Martin, curator at Assiniboine Park Zoo. “Something you get once a year that's a special treat is something everybody enjoys."

It'll all happen again this weekend at the polar bear and cat enclosures.

Staff said the best time to catch the action is in the morning.

The zoo is also planning other events as part of its Thanksgiving Fall Festival including family-friendly activities, a photo op and a fourth birthday party for Hudson.

Additionally, the park is saying thanks to visitors by offering 25 per cent off admission.
