The Winnipeg Police Service is asking for the public’s help in identifying a man believed to be behind two financial institution thefts.

According to police, branches located on Dublin Avenue and St. Mary’s Road were both targeted with similar thefts in July 2014.

Police said a man asked to change over a significant amount of Canadian currency from $20 and $50 denominations into $100 denominations.

The teller complied and counted out the appropriate amount of $100 bills.

Police believe the man then slipped some of that money into his pocket while counting it before asking for it to be exchanged into US currency.

The teller placed the money back in the till, believing it to be the same amount previously counted.

The man then requests the original cash back.

The teller complied, not realizing until later that a significant amount of money was missing, said police.

Officers describe the suspect as an Asian male, five feet three inches tall (160 cm), 20-30 years old with a stocky built.

He has a thin, trimmed beard along his jaw line and was wearing a black baseball cap, with round plastic-framed glasses and light blue button-down short sleeved dress shirt.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 204-986-2877 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
