Premier Greg Selinger could be facing serious challenges to his leadership of the NDP.

Sources tell CTV, many within the party, including some cabinet ministers, are openly questioning his leadership and even asking him to step aside.

"When you hear senior party members express the concerns that have been expressed you have to pay attention to that," said Finance Minister Jennifer Howard.

One source says party members are unhappy with the PST hike and how Selinger handled the aftermath of the tax increase.

"Ridiculous notion that we're going to raise the PST," said Selinger in 2011. "That's nonsense, everybody knows that."

The government then went on to raise the tax in 2013.

"We all know that that could have been done a lot better than what it was," said Stan Struthers, Municipal Government Minister. "I think what the Premier needs to do is reflect on that look at that and come to his own conclusions about that."

A recent poll done by Probe Research for CTV Winnipeg and the Winnipeg Free Press shows the NDP trailing far behind the Progressive Conservatives.

CTV has requested an interview with the Premier. In the meantime his team on Broadway put out this statement:

“Premier Selinger remains focused on the job he was elected to do, delivering on the priorities of Manitoba families, creating jobs and opportunities for young people, and growing our economy.”

This comes in the wake of high profile NDP member Judy Wasylycia-Leis losing badly in the race for Winnipeg Mayor to Brian Bowman.

Party members wouldn't put a firm timeframe on Selinger's decision but said it needs to be made sooner rather than later.

"If he were to make a decision to step aside, you need time for a leader to do all the things that a leader needs to do," said Howard.

With an election likely in just 18 months or less, political analyst Paul Thomas wonders if it might already be too late to pick a brand new leader.

"I don't think there's time to orchestrate a replacement for Selinger," said Thomas.

The premier's spokesperson suggested he might be available to speak to the media Tuesday.
