A Winnipeg family is sharing the details of the scary moment a crane came crashing down on their house.

The house next door was in the midst of having new shingles installed on the roof on Tuesday, when the crane being used to lift shingles tipped.

“It sounded like something like flipped or like something fell it was just really loud. I thought it was a garbage truck,” said 8-year-old Gage Sawchuk.

Sawchuk was playing video games when the crane sliced a back part of the house.

Sawchuck ran to his mom's room, she was in bed at the time, beside the air conditioning unit which fell out of the window.

12-year-old Davin Bencharski was also at home at the time, sleeping in the basement.

Everyone involved is thankful no one got hurt.

"We were sitting out here and the guys are saying the guy driving the crane felt it tipping and started to bring the arm as he felt it tipping, but if he hadn't had the foresight to do that it would have come through with 30 bundles of shingles but right on top of me and my kids," said mom Nicole Bencharski.

J. General Contracts Roofing, the company installing the shingles, hired another company, Star Building Materials, which provided a truck and crane to deliver and lift the shingles up on the roof.

Star Building Materials vice president Jim Phillips tells CTV News the crane fell because of mechanical failure on the truck.

Phillips said the company is filing a claim with Manitoba Public Insurance which will cover damages to the house.

The family says the house was inspected and it’s safe for them to continue living there.
