Parents right across the province will soon have to complete the Respect In Sport program before their child is allowed to play on a team sanctioned by Hockey Manitoba.
The change comes after the organization passed a motion in January which will require at least one parent from each family take the online course starting in September 2015.
The move brings the rest of the province in line with rules already put in place in Winnipeg.
Hockey Winnipeg implemented a mandatory Respect In Sport Parent Program in 2014.
Previously, Hockey Manitoba has only asked coaches and officials to get their Respect In Sport certification.
Hockey Manitoba Executive Director Peter Woods said via email the requirement was “introduced to ensure greater accountability of members.”
The rules require at least one parent or legal guardian of any player to get their Respect In Sport certification before their child is allowed to register for minor hockey.
The course costs $12 and takes about one hour to complete.
