A spike in road fatalities over the last three months has the provincial auto insurer worried.

Manitoba Public Insurance released figures showing more people have died on Manitoba roads in the last three months than the average for the same period from the last five years.

A total of 34 people died during that time period this year, compared to an average of 24. So far this year, 71 people have died in road fatalities, meaning more than 50 per cent of this year’s road fatalities happened in the last three months.

“Sadly, many of these fatalities have involved not using seatbelts, head-on collisions and driver inattention,” Ward Keith,vice-president of business development and communications for Manitoba Public Insurance, said in a news release.

MPI advised drivers to slow down and drive to the road conditions. To learn about MPI’s winter tire program, go to MPI’s website.
