An 11-month-old orphaned polar bear cub from Churchill has arrived at the Winnipeg zoo’s International Polar Bear Conservation Centre.

“The bear is adjusting well to her new surroundings at the IPBCC,” said Dr. Brian Joseph, head of veterinary services, in a release. “She’s a young cub and in good health so we anticipate that she’ll make a smooth transition as she adapts to life at the Assiniboine Park Zoo.”

The cub's mother was killed earlier in November during a search for another bear that attacked two people in Churchill.

The zoo is also home to three other polar bears, including two-year-old Hudson, three-year-old Storm and 11-month-old Aurora.

Zoo officials said they’ll work with northern communities to name the new bear.

The cub will be in a minimum 30-day quarantine period to adapt to her new surroundings and will be off-exhibit to the public, said the zoo.
