A new report is recommending more support for patients up to 12 years old on board STARS air ambulances in Manitoba.

The review was called after the helicopter was grounded last year following a death and two critical incidents, including one involving a child.

Two-year-old Morgan Moar Campbell suffered brain damage when his oxygen tube came out during a flight between Brandon and Winnipeg.

The report calls for the creation of a pediatric transport team on all flights involving child patients.

Dr. Brian Postl, who conducted the review, says the changers will address patient safety concerns.

"These are very acute needs in high risk situations and small amounts of time can make a big difference," said Postl.

Other recommendations call for improved training and accreditation of staff.

The province and STARS have accepted all the suggestions.

STARS resumed service in Manitoba for emergency cases in March, along with for some hospital transfers of adult patients earlier this summer.
