Students at Elwick Community School are learning life skills for the good of others.

Kids in the school’s bike build program volunteer their time to fix up old bicycles to donate to people in need.

Principal Peter Obendoerfer runs the program. He said the idea is to get bikes to kids in the community and other people who couldn't afford one otherwise.

"Especially our new Canadians; it's a lot less expensive than taking the bus, or riding in a car,” said Obendoerfer.

But for the program to ride along smoothly, it need bikes to be donated. And the students will take them in any condition.

"We get bikes without wheels, some pretty trashed bikes and we can take parts from them,” said Obendoerfer.

With a lot of hard work, the bikes are made to be as good as new – resulting in hundreds of donated bicycles throughout the years.

The school is hoping more people will donate their old bikes, so that many more people can be helped.
