A man was taken to hospital after attempting to make a large jump on a snowmobile using a homemade ramp.

STARS Air Ambulance spokesperson Cam Heke said the incident happened just before 10 a.m. Saturday near Starbuck, Man.

He said about 20 people were gathered on a private property. A man drove a snowmobile up an eight-foot wooden ramp and attempted to land on a dirt hill about 18 metres away.

“The patient didn’t have enough speed, so they didn’t quite make it all the way over the dirt downslope,” Heke told CTV News.

“At that point, the patient went over the handlebars of the snowmobile and it landed on the patient.”

Heke said STARS transported the patient to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg with serious injuries, but he didn’t require critical care during the trip.

He said his injuries could have been a lot worse if not for the patient’s protective gear.

“Because of that gear, he was able to survive and he didn’t have worse injuries that could have been life threatening,” Heke said.
