Winnipeg police arrested one suspect in a serious assault that sent two people to hospital in the city’s downtown on Friday.

Emergency crews were called to the 300 block of Ellice Avenue around 1:25 a.m. for a report of two people assaulted.

They found a 42-year-old man suffering from serious upper body wounds. Paramedics took him to hospital in critical condition.

They also treated a 39-year-old woman for injuries.

Officers arrested a 32-year-old man spotted leaving the area on a bike. He’s been charged with assault causing bodily harm related to the injured woman.

Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the male victim.

Part of Carlton Street was closed off between Ellice Avenue and Qu'Appelle Avenue for part of Friday morning while police investigated.
