Winnipeg police confirmed Jan. 14 that a man reported missing a year and a half ago was the victim of a homicide.

Robert (Bobby) Thomson, 21, was reported missing in Winnipeg in July 2012.

In recent months, police and Thomson’s family had renewed calls for help in locating him.

Following a lengthy investigation, police said it had been determined that Thomson was a homicide victim.

Police said Thomson met a man and a woman in the area of River Avenue and Osborne Street on July 21, 2012. They bought liquor and socialized near the Assiniboine riverbank.

Police said a fight broke out and Thomson was pushed into the river and a male suspect fled the scene.

The family's public plea and media coverage helped crack the case, said police.

On Jan. 13, 2014, officers charged Tanner James Prevost, 21, with second-degree murder, said police.

Officers said Prevost was already in custody at the time of his arrest on an unrelated matter.
