A contest launched to shine the spotlight on substandard housing has announced its winners Wednesday morning.

Three rooming houses in the West End were named the winners of the “Worst Home that Welfare Funds” contest. Organized by the EIA Advocates Network, it aimed to give a voice to those who are forced to live in poor conditions because the government assistance they rely on isn’t enough to pay for better housing.

Organizers said the contest represents the struggle some Manitobans face to find safe and affordable housing while on employment and income assistance.

Photos posted this morning showing the "winning" homes show overcrowding, exposed live wires, infestations, and unserviced fire extinguishers.
